New Delhi: More than 2,500 cases of COVID-19 subvariant JN.1 and its lineages have been detected in the country so far, INSACOG said on Thursday. There are 1,084 JN.1 SARS-CoV-2 sequences in 18 states and UTs, while its JN.1.1 sublineage has been detected in 1,111 cases, according to data compiled by the SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium of the India (INSACOG). JN.1.11 has been detected in 302 cases, while the rest of the cases were detected in the sublineages of JN.1.
According to INSACOG data, a total of 2,593 cases of the JN.1 subvariant of COVID and its lineages have been detected in India.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a separate “variant of concern” given its rapid spread, but said it poses a “low” risk to global public health.

The JN.1 subvariant of the coronavirus was previously classified as a variant of interest (VOI) as part of the BA.2.86 sublineages, the main lineage that is classified as VOI, the world body said.
