A five-year-old Venezuelan migrant boy died of sepsis after contracting multiple infections inside a dirty Chicago migrant center that left several sick.
Jean Carlos Martínez was plagued by multiple illnesses, including COVID-19 and group A strep, which “quickly became fatal.” the city of Chicago said in a statement.
Martinez died Dec. 17 after being rushed to the hospital after shelter staff attempted to perform chest compressions on the boy.
The city had previously insisted that there was no outbreak in central Pilsen, even though four other children also had to be taken to hospital around the same time.
Martinez’s autopsy said he had COVID-19, adenovirus, rhinovirus and group A strep. according to Spectrum News.
City officials still maintain that all shelter residents receive medical screenings, including “weekly on-site support provider, on-site vaccination events for COVID, chickenpox and [the] flu.”
He also insisted that migrants have access to health centers for all health care needs, the statement said.
The shelter serves about 2,300 people and was struggling earlier this winter due to the growing list of medical emergencies occurring within its walls.
A volunteer revealed in December that neighbors asked them for blankets and clothing, among other items.
Gov. JB Pritzker pledged $182 million, while Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle donated $70 million more to help immigrants in the city.
This is in addition to the $160 million the state also awarded in November to “welcome” immigrants to the sanctuary city.
In total, Illinois has spent $478 million on the immigration crisis, according to Fox News.
More than 36,000 immigrants have passed through Chicago in the last 18 months. There are currently 13,000 immigrants in shelters within Chicago city limits.
