S is for sadness.
A seemingly innocent tweet by beloved “Sesame Street” icon Elmo sparked an avalanche of worrying reactions and reassurance from President Joe Biden.
“Elmo just signed up! How’s everybody? the puppet, who apparently is only 3 years old, published in X (formerly Twitter).
What Elmo didn’t know was that he was about to be inundated with responses ranging from football losses to job layoffs, and even marriage problems and the imminent destruction of the human race.
However, a common theme among the tweets was that they all seemed to be at their breaking point.
“Elmo, I’m going to be real. I’m at my fucking limit.” wrote a userwhose response has garnered more than half a million likes on the social media platform.
“I’m not going to lie…I’m tired, Elmo.” a second person wrote. “There’s a lot going on, little Red.”
“Elmo, every day, the abyss we contemplate takes on a unique horror. One that was previously unfathomable in nature. Our inevitable doom, which once accelerated in years or months, now accelerates in hours, even minutes.” a third user sadly reflected. “However, I had a good grapefruit before, thanks for asking.”
The reaction to Elmo’s message even caught the attention of Biden, 81, who assured his fellow Americans that no one is alone, even when things seem dark.
“I know how difficult it is some days to sweep away the clouds and get to sunnier days.” he wrote. “Our friend Elmo is right: we have to be there for each other, offer our help to the neighbor in need and, above all, ask for help when we need it.”
“Even if it is difficult, you are never alone,” the 46th president concluded.
Several celebrities also expressed their own concerns.
“Resist the temptation to tell Elmo that I’m a little sad.” wrote “Hunger Games” actress Rachel Zegler..
“I’m just looking for someone to talk to and show me some love, if you know what I mean.” rapper T-Pain intervened.
Other X users were simply flabbergasted at the amount of trauma that was occurring.
“Elmo will regret being on the Internet” trolled a user.
“We need to start checking on our friends. Thousands of people tell Elmo that they are depressed. “Our friends are here expressing their sadness at an emotionally attentive muppet.” said a second person.
Former television personality Dr. Phil took the opportunity to promote his new book, “We’re in Trouble: How to Steadfastly Defend the Soul and Sanity of America.”
The outpouring of emotional reactions even took Elmo by surprise. So much so that he wrote in a follow-up tweet: “Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will be checking in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you. #Emotional well-being.”
The official “Sesame Street” account also reacted by listing mental health resources.
“Thank you @Elmo for reaching out with a reminder for us to pause and take a mindful moment to focus on how we’re feeling.” the published account.
