What is AdBlue?

AdBlue, the new standard for BS6 diesel vehicles, is a registered trademark for an exhaust fluid used in these vehicles. It is not a fuel additive and is colorless.

What is AdBlue made of?

AdBlue liquid is composed of high purity urea and deionized water. All new age vehicles powered by diesel engine come with a separate AdBlue tank. This safe-to-use fluid, along with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, reduces the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere. Non-SCR cars use Lean NOx Trap (LNT) technology, such as Hyundais and Kias powered by smaller diesel engines. LNT is also a catalyst that is a low-cost alternative to SCR that also has low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. However, Mahindra still uses SCR in the oil burner XUV300, hence the need for AdBlue as well.

How does AdBlue work?

Let’s divide this catalytic reduction process and mechanism into two main steps:

  • SCR, as mentioned above, is an aftertreatment process that includes a chamber in the exhaust pipe. Through sensors and an electronic unit, the AdBlue from the tank is injected into the exhaust system before this SCR catalyst.
  • Here, the AdBlue heats up, breaks down into carbon dioxide and ammonia and reacts further with the nitrous gases released from the exhaust. However, the reaction causes harmful nitrous molecules to break down into nitrogen and water.

What does AdBlue do?

As mentioned above, harmful gases that would otherwise have polluted the environment are now converted into harmless particles and released as vapor through the exhaust pipe.

How does AdBlue help?

The NOx emitted by diesel cars is harmful to the environment. Thanks to AdBlue, these emissions are significantly reduced and finally meet the strict emission limits set by different standards around the world. AdBlue fluid treatment is said to help filter out more than 90 percent of harmful gas emissions, resulting in less pollution.

How do I use AdBlue and what is its price?

AdBlue tank capacity and level indicator:

The capacity of the AdBlue catalyst tank varies between 5 and 20 liters and depends on the diesel vehicle. This capacity is listed near the fuel tank cap or in the owner’s manual. Based on the distance traveled, the latter helps decide when a recharge or recharge is necessary. Usually, authorized workshops take care of this during the vehicle inspection. Meanwhile, there is a separate gauge on the vehicle’s instrument cluster that shows the amount of AdBlue with a reserve level.

AdBlue Price in India:

AdBlue price may vary from Rs. 85~100 per liter.

Anything else I should know about AdBlue?

The moving car will not stop halfway if the AdBlue level drops or runs out. However, most cars have an electronic control unit that can reduce power until the AdBlue catalyst is replenished. Once stopped, this unit may not allow you to start the engine until the AdBlue fluid is refilled. There are places where you can buy the fluid online and offline, but it is best to do so at the brand’s dealership.
