Tokyo Japan:

The creator of Japan’s popular “Dragon Ball” comics and anime cartoon, Akira Toriyama, has died at age 68, his production team said Friday.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that the creator of the manga Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1 due to an acute subdural hematoma,” reads a statement posted on the official X account of the “Dragon Ball” franchise.

“We deeply regret that you still had several works in the midst of creation with great enthusiasm,” reads the statement attributed to Toriyama’s Bird Studio.

“He would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world,” he added.

“We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time.”

“Dragon Ball” is one of the best-selling and most influential manga titles of all time.

It was first serialized in 1984 and has spawned countless anime series, movies, and video games.

It features a boy named Son Goku who increases his powers by collecting magic balls containing dragons to aid him and his allies in a fight to protect the Earth from evil enemies.

Publisher Shueisha said in a statement that it was “very saddened by the sudden news of his death.”

Eiichiro Oda, creator of the major Japanese manga franchise “One Piece,” said in a statement that Toriyama’s death came “too soon” and left “shoes too big to fill.”

“To think that I will never see him again… I am overwhelmed with sadness,” Oda said.

Subdural hematoma is a serious condition in which blood pools between the skull and the surface of the brain.
