Al Pacino made a room full of Hollywood stars a little nervous to close the 96th Academy Awards.
Instead of listing the 10 nominees while presenting the best picture Oscar, or offering a conventional “And the Oscar goes to,” Pacino simply said “Here it comes” before slowly opening the envelope.
“And my eyes see ‘Oppenheimer,’” Pacino said next, to lukewarm applause from an audience that seemed unsure whether that statement was the most important proclamation of the night.
“Yes, yes,” Pacino, 83, said of the film that was considered the favorite to win best picture and ended up with seven best picture awards of the night.
At that moment, the music started and the crowd applauded. The camera saw Christopher Nolan, the film’s director, and Emma Thomas, one of its producers, as they got up and walked to the stage.
Did Jimmy Kimmel see it coming? Minutes before, Kimmel, the presenter of the ceremony, joked about the need to tear up the envelope that said that Emma Stone had won the best actress award for “Poor Things”, alluding to her epic. “Moonlight”/“La La Land” mix for best film of 2017.
After the ceremony, Bill Kramer, the academy’s executive director, said he was pleased with Pacino’s performance. “Everything went very well,” Kramer said. “He was just having fun up there.”
