‘All My Heroes Have Been Handcuffed’: Killer Mike Talks Grammy Arrest on ‘The View’

Progressive rapper and activist Killer Mike won three Grammy Awards, including rap album of the year, last week, but was taken backstage in handcuffs during the ceremony, arrested and booked on a misdemeanor charge.

On Monday’s episode of “The View,” host Sunny Hostin told the rapper that there were other headlines besides his wins that night. “It really bothered me because it was unnecessary and you don’t do that on that special night,” Hostin said.

Hostin asked the rapper, whose real name is Michael Renner, although it is an ongoing legal matter, what he could share about what happened that night.

Killer Mike described the night and the incident that led to his arrest and detention at the Los Angeles Police Department for hours. “The backstage was packed. The winners were elated and I think security got a little overzealous,” he said.

He continued: “It’s water behind me for me. I would like to say that all my heroes have been handcuffed: Malcolm (X), Martin (Luther King Jr.), (Nelson) Mandela, Medgar (Evers). I came out with the same dignity and respect that I came in with, and I would implore people to just accept it.”

In our Salon Talks interview with MSNBC journalist Joy Reid, who wrote “Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the love story that woke up America” He said figures like Evers were crucial to the civil rights movement because he “was the person who was training those young people how to work for civil rights.”
