It is a sad time for the entertainment world as iconic radio host Ameen Sayani passed away at the age of 91. His son Rajil Sayani confirmed the news and stated that Ameen Sayani breathed his last in the hospital last night. The cause of death has been given as heart failure, he added.

Rajil said: “He was in the hospital and passed away last night; “We will issue a statement on the last rites very soon.”

Born on December 21, 1932 in Mumbai, Ameen Sayani came from a multilingual family. He started his career as a broadcaster in English but switched to Hindi after independence.

Sayani rose to fame with the creation of ‘Geetmala’, a groundbreaking show that aired in December 1952. The show, which featured chart-topping hits, became a cultural phenomenon in South Asia. Its unparalleled success led to its longevity on broadcast, from 1952 to 1994, followed by revivals in 2000-2001 and 2001-2003 with slight variations to its name.


With ‘Geetmala’, Ameen became the first Indian host to curate and host an entire show, showcasing his deep knowledge of the changing music landscape. The show’s success solidified Sayani’s status as a radio maestro.
