Android 14 QPR2 intentionally removes Pixel ‘battery information’ | Top Vip News

With Android 14 QPR1 in December, Google officially introduced “battery information” to Pixel devices. With the stable Android 14 QPR2 Pixel update earlier this week, the battery page disappeared and Google has since confirmed that it was an intentional removal rather than a bug.

Going to Settings > About Phone > Battery Information on Android 14 QPR1 would list “Manufacturing date” and “Cycle count,” with Google noting how: “Due to quality inspections before shipping, the count may of cycles is not zero on the first use.”

People appreciated this official method to track battery health. It comes as Google, since Android 13 QPR1 Beta, has been preparing a Settings > “Battery Health” page for Pixel devices. We were able to enable it in October 2022.

In particular, it would indicate a “maximum capacity” percentage: “This is an estimated measure of the battery’s capacity relative to when it was new. A lower capacity may result in fewer hours of use between charges.”

It will also alert you when your battery “needs attention” and give you tips, such as enabling adaptive charging. Work on this continues, but it has not yet been released. Google introduced a Pixel troubleshooting experience starting with the 8 series and then earlier devices to offer a battery diagnostic tool.

With Android 14 QPR2 dropping March stable features earlier this week, Google removed the Pixel’s battery information page. When this occurred during the beta period, people reported it to the Android Issue Tracker, assuming it was a bug.

Google on Monday, March 4 updated the problem to say “Won’t fix (intended behavior)” and: “We only enable this page on Pixel 8a and later, so this is WAI (works as intended).” It is also not available in Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 or Android 15 Developer Preview 1.

As many have pointed out, it’s strange that Google removed a working feature that was active for three months (and another three in beta). Unless accuracy issues arise with cycle counting, it should remain available. (Any issues should have been caught during the preview period and not pushed to the stable release.)
