The In Memoriam section of the Academy Awards is always one of the most emotional moments of the show. This year was no exception, as the 96th Oscars celebrate the artists, filmmakers and craft talents who died last year. The In Memoriam segment began with a remembrance of Alexei Navalny, the political prisoner who died on February 16 and who appeared in last year’s winning documentary, “Navalny.”

The names displayed on the screen were Andrea Boccelli and her son, Matteo, sang “Time to Say Goodbye.”

Every year, the Academy leaves some beloved names out of the montage, which provokes the anger of some viewers. Although the Oscars.org website presents a much longer list, the outrage over who appears on screen is part of the tradition of watching the Oscars.

This year, several beloved artists and filmmakers didn’t make it to the main segment, including Treat Williams, Angus Cloud, Lance Reddick, Norman Lear, Burt Young, Lance Reddick, Ron Cephas Jones, Suzanne Somers and Terence Davies. With the exception of Cloud, their names were shown on a short collective slide at the end of the segment.

Among the talents recognized during the segment were actors Ryan O’Neal, Tom Wilkinson, Jane Birkin, Richard Roundtree, Glenda Jackson and Carl Weathers. Filmmakers William Friedkin and Norman Jewison were also remembered.

Although they were best known for their television careers, Matthew Perry and Andre Braugher also appeared on screen. Also included were Tina Turner, Robbie Robertson and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In 2023, Anne Heche and Charlbi Dean were among the people who were not mentioned on screen.
