Thomas Cailley’s supernatural dramaThe animal kingdom” and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a fall” lead the race in the 49th edition of the César Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s film, which just earned an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The animal kingdom,” which premiered at Un Certain Regard in Cannes and won an award, will compete for the top César awards, including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from the French cinematic tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-son drama (played by Romain Duris and Paul Kircher, both César nominees), that weaves together some contemporary concerns about the future of humanity. It is produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.
Meanwhile, “Anatomy of a Fall” stars Sandra Hüller, the German actress nominated for the César, Oscar and BAFTA awards, as a novelist who is put on trial after the mysterious death of her husband in their remote chalet. The film, which has already won two Golden Globes, is produced by Marie-Ange Luciani at Les Films de Pierre and David Thion at Les Films Pelleas.
The other big contenders for the César this year are Jeanne Herry’s “All Your Faces,” produced by Hugo Selignac’s Chi-Fou-Mi and Alain Attal’s Les Films du Trésor, and Cédric’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight opening film. Khan “The Goldman case”, produced by Benjamin Elalouf at Moonshaker Films. “The Goldman Case,” based on the 1976 trial of radical criminal Pierre Goldman, seems timely because it addresses anti-Semitism, racial discrimination and the failures of the justice system. Arthur Harari, the actor and filmmaker who co-wrote “Anatomy of a Fall” with Triet (his partner), also stars in “The Goldman Affair” and is nominated for his supporting role in the film.
“All Your Faces,” which also moved the members of the Cesar Academy, revolves around perpetrators and victims of crimes who confront each other under a restorative justice plan. Four of the five places in the best supporting actress category went to the actresses of “All Your Faces”: Adele Exarchopoulos (“Blue is the Warmest Color”), Leila Bekhti (“La Source”), Miou-Miou (“The Science of Sleep”) and Elodie Bouchez (“Simone: Woman of the Century”).
As previously announced, the director of “Oppenheimer” Christopher Nolannext to Agnes Jaouia beloved French actor, screenwriter and filmmaker, will receive the honorary César Awards during the upcoming ceremony, which will take place at the Olympia Concert Hall on February 23.
