Mehta, who previously directed undercover lady (2023), agreed that doing justice to a new version is, indeed, an enormous responsibility. But he also believes that every filmmaker is judged in any way. “Making movies itself is a risky business. Whether you make an original or a remake, you will be judged,” he said.

“The more I hear the noise around me, the more pressured I will feel. My idea is to make a film that everyone will enjoy and remember. I’m not going to let myself get bogged down by anything else,” the filmmaker told us.

While he refuses to divulge details about who would step into Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan’s shoes, he shared that the casting of his “crazy, amazing” cast was underway and the remake was in its pre-production stage.

Would the remake have a similar plot or would it make modifications to fit modern times? “I have to do it in a way that is relevant to the audiences of these modern times. I want this generation to also be able to watch such legendary films,” he opined.

So how do you imagine it? Bawarchi be? “Whoever is going to play Bawarchi It’s going to be magical,” he concludes.
