It’s no secret that Apple has big AI ambitions for its next major iOS release. Rumors have been circulating about possible partnerships to bring generative AI to the iPhone. And now it looks like the Cupertino tech giant is casting a wide net in its search for the best AI models.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Apple was in talks with Google to license its impressive Gemini AI for upcoming iOS 18 features. Apparently, they have also been in talks with OpenAI about possible integration of its viral ChatGPT technology. But the latest scoop is that Apple also has its eye on an AI alliance in China.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple recently held talks with Baidu about using the Chinese technology company’s artificial intelligence models. This would allow Apple to offer AI intelligence to its customers in China without running afoul of regulations that require official approval for AI systems.

While heavyweights like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT don’t exist in China due to censorship, more than 40 domestic AI models have earned the government’s seal of approval so far, including Baidu’s much-hyped ErnieBot.

Apple may be considering a multi-vendor AI strategy. No partnership has been finalized yet, but the wheels are in motion to close deals ahead of Apple’s annual developer conference in June, setting the stage for the unveiling of AI-powered iOS 18.

Rumors suggest a hybrid on-device/cloud model where some AI processing is done locally on iPhones, while more intensive number crunching is offloaded to remote servers powered by partner technology like Gemini, ChatGPT or Ernie .

While Apple reportedly has its own internal generative AI in the works, the company seems determined to increase its capabilities through these external partnerships. After years of outshining its rivals in mobile chips and cameras, perhaps Apple is hoping to get a leg up in the AI race through some clever partnerships.
