The family and friends of Australian-born Bianca Censori, wife of Kanye West, are said to be concerned for her well-being. From the pictures and stories I’ve seen online, I can’t say I blame them.
Censori, 29, an architect with a master’s degree from the University of Melbourne, and West, 46, the rapper ex-husband of reality star Kim Kardashian, secretly married in December 2022 and have been causing controversy ever since.
Censori has been seen in increasingly daring and compromising situations, from appearing to perform a sexual act with her husband in Venice to wearing increasingly revealing clothing.
Additionally, West has posted disturbing images of herself on her Instagram page for her 20 million followers to see. They include shots of his wife dressed in fetish clothing, performing household chores, all raised to a chorus of criticism.
Censori does not have her own social media accounts, apparently banned by her husband, who says it is for his own protection.

Of course, what we see is just a snapshot of a marriage, and for his part, West has said he just wants to show off his beautiful wife.
However, his ex-girlfriend, Julia Fox, 34, who dated West for a month in 2022, made some serious allegations in her memoir, Down The Drain, about someone she refers to only as “the artist.”
She revealed that ‘the artist’ attempted to control what she wore by sending her a wardrobe of clothes that he had previously approved. He also tried to persuade her to get breast implants.
When it comes to Censori, photographs of her before she met West show a happy, smiling young woman partying with her friends in Melbourne, dressed in cocktail dresses, shorts and T-shirts.
By contrast, photographs of her taken last month during Paris Fashion Week wearing a fur stole and sheer stockings, without what appears to be underwear underneath (a choice that could well face charges of indecent exposure) seem alarming.
Although Censori insists that she feels comfortable in her own body, it is clear to her family and friends that something has changed.
Over the years, I have had several patients who have been in coercive and controlling relationships, a form of psychological abuse whereby the perpetrator carries out a pattern of manipulative behaviors within a relationship.
What is shocking to those on the outside is how the victim often doesn’t even realize this is happening.
I sat in front of people (mostly women, but men can also be victims of coercive control) and told them I was worried they were being controlled, and they shook their heads in complete denial.
One woman was not allowed to see her family, have her own bank account and had to keep a tracker on her phone so her husband knew where she was at all times. She did not see this as shameful and chilling behavior.

He had convinced her it was because he cared so much about her and wanted to know she would always be safe.
The manipulator is usually very clever when it comes to gaining control: at first it happens gently and in small, subtle ways. They might suggest that a partner is not very good with his finances or that he is being scammed in some way, and that it would be best if he took sole control of the money.
Perhaps, after an argument with their family, the controller encourages someone to cut off contact, saying that their family doesn’t deserve it.
It is generally expressed in terms of wanting to help the other person be happier. Little by little, the victim’s sense of identity is destroyed and her confidence is eroded.
Sometimes it can happen so gradually that the person does not realize it, until one day they wake up and realize that they hardly know themselves anymore.
As they often deliberately distance themselves from friends and loved ones, opening their eyes to what is really happening is even more challenging.
But people can and do escape these types of toxic relationships, and the first step is always to recognize the signs that they might be being manipulated. Women’s Aid highlights ten key red flags to look out for:
- Isolate yourself from friends and family;
- Deprive him of basic needs, such as food;
- Taking control over aspects of your daily life, such as where you can go, who you can see, what you can wear, and when you can sleep;
- Monitor you through online communication tools or spyware;
- Deny you access to support services, such as medical services;
- Repeatedly belittling yourself, saying that you are worthless;
- Humiliate, degrade or dehumanize him;
- Control your finances;
- Make threats or intimidate you.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. But if any of these sound like the relationship you’re in, then it could indicate coercive control, a recognized form of domestic abuse. It is a crime and the law is on your side.
