Of course, the hard work definitely paid off, as Austin earned widespread praise for his performance, as well as his first Oscar nomination. However, that doesn’t mean he’s willing to go to such extremes again anytime soon.
Ahead of the film’s March 1 release, Austin and Dune Director Denis Villeneuve sat down with the Los Angeles Times to talk about his transformation into the sociopathic Feyd, and Austin revealed that he felt forced to scale back his method of acting for the benefit of himself and others.
In complete contrast to his all-consuming approach towards elvisAustin said he “made a conscious decision to have a boundary” when the cameras weren’t rolling.
In response, Denis made it clear that Austin could slip in and out of character very easily, and described their experience together on set as “tremendously fun.”
If you have seen the trailer for Dune: Part Two, you’d be forgiven for barely recognizing Austin, who sports a menacing bald look as Feyd. Speaking about the look, Denis said the “total transformation” opened up a whole new side of Austin and also removed the last remaining bits of Elvis.
For his part, Austin was reluctant to comment too much on the physical transformation so as not to “take away the mystery.” Although he did say that it was a “gift” to “look in the mirror and not see yourself.”
