Babar Azam wants captaincy in all three formats after PCB asked him to replace Shaheen Afridi in T20Is: report | Top Vip News

Pakistan cricket appears headed for another shake-up months after Babar Azam surprisingly stepped down from the captaincy role in all formats. According to several reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is trying to convince Babar to return to captaincy in all formats after losing faith in Shaheen Afridi.

Notably, PCB appointed Shan Masood as Pakistan’s Test captain just before the challenging tour of Australia last December and handed the reins of the T20I team to 22-year-old Afridi, hoping the young fast bowler would adapt to the challenge.

However, according to a report by the news agency IANOSPCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi along with the national selectors will meet Babar and convince him to take up the captaincy position in all formats of the national cricket team.

The Pakistan cricket team is currently training at the Kakul military academy in Abbottabad.

PCB expects Babar to take up the role of captain for T20Is and all other formats, replacing current skipper Afridi with barely two months left for the T20 World Cup to begin.

“The decision emerged from a late-night meeting between PCB president Mohsin Naqvi and the selectors,” a source was quoted as saying. IANOS.

While PCB wants Babar to take charge until the T20 World Cup, the star batsman is more interested in taking a long-term role as captain, which should not be limited to the main event.

“Babar has already conveyed to the PCB that he wants to lead the national team in all formats and has kept it as a precondition for considering captaincy in the T20I format,” the source revealed.

Sources close to the star batsman have also advised Babar to present his demands to the PCB as the time is right.

“The PCB is vulnerable at the moment. They want Babar for the World T20I. And they would have to agree to his demands because of the board’s vulnerable position,” the source said.

As PCB selectors discuss the next T20I captain and close in on Babar Azam; Current captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has not informed about the PCB’s decision.

“There is a clear lack of communication between the PCB and Shaheen Shah Afridi, which is worrying. “None of the selectors nor the PCB president himself have contacted Shaheen Shah Afridi in reference to the ongoing discussion about replacing him,” the source added.

But the news about a probable change has raised eyebrows among many, who have criticized the PCB for remaining silent on the matter and allowing rumors and speculation to take up space in the debates.

Former cricketer Shahid Afridi has said that it would be unfair to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi even after leading the team in just one series.

Shaheen Afridi has been actively preparing for the upcoming World Cup and has played a pivotal role in convincing Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir to return to international cricket and resume their retirements.

Shaheen was said to have approached both the cricketers and brought them back into the team to improve the performance of the national team.

But the way Shaheen has been kept in the dark about his likely replacement from the captaincy position has certainly raised questions about the working mechanisms of the PCB.
