Barbie, which was the biggest hit of 2023, the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman and a true cultural sensation that turned movie theaters pink and left a trail of opinion articles still in force following Greta’s feminist fantasy Gerwig.
Although “Barbie” received eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture, director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie failed to earn Oscar nominations for best direction and leading actress. However, “Barbie” actor Ryan Gosling earned a nomination for best supporting actor.
Her omissions from the Oscar nominations list sparked a strong reaction from fans on X (formerly Twitter), as many said the same patriarchy parodied in “Barbie” at work.

Ryan Gosling said he was disappointed after “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie were not nominated in two major categories at the 2024 Academy Awards. “I am extremely honored to be nominated for my colleagues along with such notable artists in a year of so many wonderful films. And I never thought I’d say this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s to play a plastic doll named Ken,” Gosling said in a statement. “But there’s no Ken without Barbie, and there’s no ‘Barbie’ Movie. without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film,” he added.

On Tuesday night’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel joked that Gosling being nominated for Ken while Robbie and Gerwig were snubbed “was kind of a ‘Barbie’ movie plot.”

Meanwhile, the 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host of the ceremony for the second year in a row. He has hosted the ceremony four times.
