“We played a very good first half, but we couldn’t take advantage,” Tuchel said. “The second half was a bit complicated. We scored the first goal when Leipzig was strong.

“We reacted well after the draw. The victory was good for us after three consecutive defeats.”

Bayern are in second place, eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who lead with 61 after their 2-1 win over Mainz on Friday. Leipzig was fifth with 40.

Tuchel said talk of title chances at this point was superfluous.

“We don’t need to talk about that [title chances]” he said. “We have to win every game now. The situation is clear, Leverkusen has a big advantage. “Now we have to face this situation.”

Bayern should have taken the lead in the first half when Kane hit a header in the fifth minute and came close again with a bicycle kick.

Leipzig got off to a better start after the break, testing the goalkeeper Manuel Neuer repeatedly before Kane took advantage of the counterattack after some good initial work from Jamal Musiala.

Leipzig, fighting for a top-four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League, had two golden opportunities with Benjamin Sesko but on both occasions Neuer denied the Slovenian.

The goalkeeper was defeated in the 70th minute when Sesko’s shot deflected slightly and went wide.

Kane, however, came to the rescue once again with his 27th league goal of the season, hitting a powerful low shot to snatch all three points.

“Harry has been doing this since he was 14, scoring 50 goals every year and that won’t change,” Tuchel said.

“It’s a matter of math. The more you miss, the more likely you are to score on your next chance.”
