Ben Stokes was going to be the key if England had a remote chance of removing 399, with 205 more to be made when play began after lunch on Day 4. But the England captain would be kicking himself after a lazy run between the gate. He saw him get dismissed by Shreyas Iyer, who hit a straight hit to give India an early lead in the second session and their seventh wicket of the innings.
The dismissal came in the 53rd innings and in the 10th after lunch, when the ball took the inside edge of Ben Foakes’ bat and rolled towards square. Foakes left, as did Stokes, believing there was plenty of time to make his crease. Only there wasn’t one. Iyer came running from mid-field and hit a direct hit in a moment of brilliance on the field. And so, Stokes, the man who could really change things, disappeared.
Surprisingly, after lunch, England played a brand of cricket they were not known for. Both Stokes and Foakes were extremely cautious, especially the England captain who went on a rampage and reached 11 off 29 balls.

He single-handedly held the innings together and produced an impressive rearguard effort. This was the ideal platform for Stokes to repeat Headingly. England’s hopes are now pinned on Ben Foakes, who is their last recognized batsman.
