The winners of the competition will be announced this afternoon in the German capital, at the end of the 74th Berlin Film Festival. Move to down for a live updated list of winners.
After a highly politicized run-up, the latest edition of this year’s Berlinale, directed by Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, was, in the end, quite conventional. There were no real scandals or divisive talking points. For the most part, audiences have focused on the movies, which have been a mixed bag. One of the favorites on the ground was the latest feature film by French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, Dahomey. Deadline’s Stephanie Bunbury described the film as a “wonderful provocation”, while Damon Wise described Victor Kossakovsky’s film. Architecture, another favorite, as “fascinating, magnetic.” Check out Deadline’s festival reviews here.
Outside of the competition, on Wednesday, Martin Scorsese came to town to receive the festival’s Honorary Golden Bear. Scorsese received the award from German filmmaker Wim Wenders, who described him as “the reigning king of cinema.” Scorsese’s comments during the ceremony, which you can read here, were brief. We also spoke exclusively with the filmmaker before his arrival in Berlin, and you can read it here. On the business side, the European film market was very hot. High-profile deals included our scoop that Sony took advantage of After Yang The next feature film from filmmaker Kogonada, starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, with a contract of 50 million dollars. We also revealed the internationally blocked study in Past Lives follow-up to filmmaker Celine Song Materialists. Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans are said to be in talks to star.
