Beyoncé’s pixie cut ranks high on the list of shocking transformations in celebrity hair history.

When the singer shared her new hairstyle instagram On August 3, 2013, he almost deactivated the social media platform. Yes, she looked amazing (she’s Beyoncé, she always looks amazing), but the cropped cut left her fans wondering the motivation behind the massive change.

In a new interview with Essencethe “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer finally revealed why she went from one hairline to another.

“I remember the day I decided to cut all my hair,” he shared. “I didn’t have a particular style in mind. It wasn’t an aesthetic choice, but it was a very big emotional transformation and metamorphosis that I was going through.”

Beyoncé, 42, went on to say that much of her “identity as an artist” has returned to her hair, whether it’s her long braids or her giant curls. One thing has been the unifying factor: length.

“Cutting my hair was for me rebelling against being the woman society thinks I should be,” she said. “I was a new mother, and something about the liberation of being a mother made me want to get rid of all that. It was a physical representation of me shedding the expectations placed on me. I just wanted to let it go.”

But not everyone around her was prepared to see her lose so many centimeters. Her hairstylist, Neal Farinah, who “was freaking out,” Beyoncé revealed, “because (my hair) was so long, so thick, and so healthy.”

She continued: “I just took the scissors and cut it. It was very intentional. And it was what I needed to do. And after that, I became super brave. It was the first step to many more bold decisions I made in my life and career that have led me to what I am now.”

The Grammy-winning singer, who recently announced her latest album, a country music collection called Act: II, will be out on March 29 and tomorrow she will also officially launch her Cécred hair care line. She first teased the line earlier this month, writing on Instagram: “Hair is sacred. The journey begins February 20. Visit CECRED.COM.”

In the clip, a group of women working in a hair salon are shown for the first time in images projected on a covered screen in a dark room. The salon is called ‘Headliners Hair Salon’, after the salon that Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, opened in 1990 in Houston.

The footage then cuts to shots of women with different hair textures washing and shampooing their hair, before returning to the salon as the camera zooms in on a bright neon sign inside that reads: “Headliners La Mode Salon” .

In a later shot, Beyoncé is shown looking directly into the camera while washing her hair in a sink before the Headliners hair salon is shown again.

The trailer ends with flashbacks of Beyoncé as a child with her 70-year-old mother Tina, waving at the camera. It then turns black as Cécred appears in white letters.

She opened up even more to Essence about naming her brand after the sense of community she’s felt around her hair.

“I think that connection of community, mother and child, father and son, and respect, and allowing yourself to be taken care of, especially for black women, who are always taking care of everyone else, is all sacred,” she said.
