Bill Maher took some time during the latest episode of Real time to share his thoughts on whether Taylor Swift could affect the upcoming presidential election.
The presenter, who was joined by Bob Costas, an American sports commentator, and Caitlin Flanagan, a writer and social critic, mentioned the superstar who has been making headlines recently for her Eras Tour world tour, her Grammy Awards and her relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs. tight end Travis Kelce.
“This is national news in the sense that this is a person who could literally change the election,” Maher said. “I don’t know what that says about this country, but I would just say to the ‘MAGA (Make America Great Again)’ people, ‘You should be very careful attacking her because she’s someone who transcends party.’”
She continued, “I mean, this is a country girl, right? She started out as a country artist. She’s a white girl from Pennsylvania, I think, who grew up on a farm, right? I never had a black boyfriend. I’m just saying that she has had many boyfriends that we all know.” Maher then proceeded to joke, “You know, if ‘MAGA’ is full of racists, then they have to like it.”
The host went on to warn Donald Trump’s followers about the influence Swift has with her huge fan base.
“I’m just saying he’s someone you could really have a problem with when it comes to attacking for ‘MAGA,’ because Trump’s people are already registered and voting for him,” Maher said. “Perhaps his voters are not registered and she does not have to say who she votes for. All she has to say is sign up. They know who she is voting for.”
He added: “So I think you might be waking up a giant who sleeps until the afternoon.”
While Swift has not publicly shared who she might vote for in the upcoming election, she has previously expressed the importance of registering to vote and casting a ballot.
In September of last year, the nonpartisan nonprofit Vote.org reported that it saw an increase in voter registration after Swift encouraged her fans to register to vote using Vote.org on her Instagram Stories, which he had 272 million followers at the time.
The organization said 157,041 eligible voters visited the site that day, which was National Voter Registration Day, as well as 35,252 new registrations.
