Legendary batsman Geoffrey Boycott expressed his displeasure over England’s bowling resources in the five-match Test series against India. England suffered a crushing series defeat 1-4 at the hands of India, who missed a couple of big names in their batting line-up. The visitors took an early lead in the series with a win in Hyderabad, but it was all downhill for them from there and they lost four matches in a row.
It was a battle between an inexperienced Indian batting line-up against England’s inexperienced spinners as the former emerged victorious with their impressive home show. Two English bowlers, Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir, made their international debuts on the Indian tour.
Boycott spoke about England’s bowling attack and said he was not surprised to see Ben Stokes and Co. suffer a crushing series defeat.
‘England bowling attack won’t scare anyone’: boycott
“It wouldn’t scare anyone: two raw kids like Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir with top-class small bowling as spinners, an ineffective fast bowler like Mark Wood who just hits the ball on the track with little movement, a big seamer like Anderson who “was used sparingly because he is at the end of his career and a Ben Stokes all-rounder who was not fit to bowl until a bit in the last Test. No wonder it was 4-1,” Boycott wrote in his column for the Telegraph. .
The list of top five wicket-takers was dominated by the Indians with only one England bowler finding a place there. Hartley was England’s highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 5 matches.
Boycott further wrote that England were lucky that Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (after the first Test) were not part of the series, but despite that, they failed to beat India.
“Inexperienced kids were never going to outperform experienced Indian spinners in India. If anyone thought that, then it was nonsense, wishful thinking. England were lucky that Virat Kohli was not available for all the series and KL Rahul only played a test,” he added.
With the series defeat, England now sit in eighth position in the World Test Championship points table, having only won three Tests out of 10.
