Malayalam Megastar Mamootty’s Bramayugam is now released in Telugu. The film, written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan, features Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharathan in pivotal roles. Let’s see what the movie is like.

History:

Set in 17th century Malabar, Thevan (Arjun Ashokan), a court singer, and his friend Koran (Manikandan R. Archery) escape from the slave trade. They attempt to cross a river, but Koran is killed by a female spirit, Yakshi (Amalda Liz). To save his life, Thevan enters a mansion owned by Kudumon Potti (Mammootty). Sidharth Bharatan is the cook at Kodumon Potti. Kodumon Potti tells Thevan that the latter can stay in the mansion. Little by little, Thevan begins to feel that something is wrong with that mansion and with Kodumon Potti. What is it? Did Thevan escape from that mansion? What is so mysterious about Kodumon Potti? This is what Bramayugam is all about.

Plus Points:

Bramayugam is a unique attempt and kudos to Mammootty for attempting something of this kind and constantly pushing the boundaries. The film revolves around three characters and takes place mainly in a mansion. So the performances and technical aspects must be excellent for a film of this type. Bramayugam gets these things right.

Mammootty gave an award-worthy performance as Kudomon Potti. The close-ups of him, the nuanced performance of him, and the punchy dialogue from him enhance the impact greatly. Instead of relying on jump scares and clichés, Bramayugam creates an eerie feeling through a ruined mansion, Mammootty’s mysterious characterization and the black and white format.

Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharatan are incredible in their respective roles. We feel Arjun Ashokan’s character and side with him. The actor’s facial expressions and body language are fantastic. There is an important sequence in which two key characters become trapped. The way he conceived and shot that sequence is mind-blowing. Although Bramayugam may seem like a creepy film, Rahul Sadasivan skillfully tackles some social issues by clearly infusing the theme of horror, depicting his conviction in the craft.

Bad points:

Bramayugam is surely not everyone’s cup of tea as it won’t be like a normal horror film. The film is slow paced for the most part and some sections of the audience may get bored as most of the conversations and scenes are long.

The entire first half is about establishing Mammootty’s characterization and building the mystery element. The director’s approach to narrate every minute aspect in detail may irritate you and you need to have more patience to enjoy the drama and proceedings.

The climax seems a little routine for this different type of film and could have been handled better. Compared to the second half, the first half is more intriguing despite its slow pace.

Technical aspects:

Technically, Malayalam films are turning out great and Bramayugam is no different. Especially the production design team did a great job. We can see greenery in and around the mansion, and even that adds to the intrigue. Christo Xavier’s haunting background score, Shehnad Jalal’s stunning cinematography and Jayadev’s compelling sound design work in the film’s favor in a big way.

The editing is in accordance with the director’s vision. Rahul Sadasivan is clear in his approach and delivers exactly what he intended. He made excellent use of the technicians and brought out the best in Mammootty and other actors. The production values are fine.

Verdict:

Overall, Bramayugam is a different attempt, but it might cater to only a segment of the audience, given its nature. Mammootty brings the role to life and his commanding presence is enhanced by splendid technical values. Arjun Ashokan and Siddharth Bharathan are good in their respective roles. The film is slow-paced for the most part, and this may not sit well with many. The drama unfolds at a leisurely pace and can sometimes be irritating. In terms of impact, the first half is better than the second half. Those who love to watch unique films may end up liking Bramayugam, but the film will be disappointing for everyone else.
