Buckingham Palace announced Monday that Britain’s King Charles, 75, has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment for it. As a result, he will delay his public duties, the palace said. Although the palace did not provide specific information about the type of cancer, it clarified that it was not related to the prostate.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for a benign prostate enlargement, another issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” Buckingham Palace said in its official statement.

“Her Majesty has today begun a program of regular treatments, during which time doctors have advised her to postpone her public duties,” the palace said. “Throughout this period, Her Majesty will continue to conduct state affairs and official procedures as usual,” she added.

“The King thanks his medical team for their quick intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” the statement added.

Taking X Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished him a speedy recovery. Sunak wrote: “Wishing Her Majesty a speedy and full recovery. I have no doubt that she will regain all her strength in no time and I know that the whole country will wish her the best.”

The leader of the UK opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, said: “On behalf of the Labor Party, I wish Her Majesty all the best for her recovery. “We look forward to seeing him quickly return to full health.”

Last month, King Charles spent three nights in hospital for a corrective procedure related to an enlarged prostate. The announcement of the King’s diagnosis coincides with the recovery of his daughter-in-law, Kate, Princess of Wales, who recently underwent abdominal surgery, leading to her hospitalization for approximately two weeks.

In September 2022, Charles ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96.
