Update #2 (February 24: 12:31 am ET): Ranked game modes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Warzone multiplayer are now back online. Players can access Modern Warfare Zombies and Warzone’s Champion’s Quest challenge has also been reactivated. As mentioned above, a Double XP event has been activated for the weekend. The end of the double XP event has been extended to Tuesday, February 27, and players can also collect double the number of skulls for the currently active Horde event.

There are still minor bug fixes that the COD team will implement heading into the weekend, including an issue with player-controlled cruise missiles in multiplayer patches not behaving accordingly.
Update #1 (February 23, 7:47 pm ET): The official Call of Duty social media accounts have announced that a fix has been implemented to restore player progression in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Warzone. However, Ranked Play modes and the Champion’s Quest challenge for Warzone will remain disabled until the progression restoration process is complete. Double XP has also been activated.

Original story: Players who logged into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Warzone early in the morning encountered an unfortunate surprise where their player level and weapon progression had been reset to 1. Along with player progression, some found that your purchased store packages were inaccessible. Issues have been reported in Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and Modern Warfare Zombies.
The Call of Duty team has posted on social media that ranked play access in both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone and player access to Modern Warfare Zombies has been disabled while the issue is investigated. Call of Duty: Warzone Champion’s Quest has also been disabled, although a fix for loadouts has already been implemented. The issues are being actively investigated.

CharlieIntel initially reported on Twitter that skill-based Match Making, the algorithm used to balance matches in online play, had also been affected. According to players, Modern Warfare 3’s matchmaking rules were dramatically relaxed and matches seemed easier to manage while problems persisted. While it is still possible to access multiplayer (at least at the time of writing) to try out Modern Warfare 3 without SBMM active, players will likely see unusual behavior in their player ranks and weapon progression if they play during this time.
Sledgehammer Games, the main studio behind Modern Warfare 3, recently gave players an explanation of how SBMM works for the popular first-person shooter. The developers had even shared plans to create an experimental playlist that would allow players to join matches without SBMM, although no date for the experiment had been publicly shared.
The interruption comes just after Call of Duty was declared the best-selling game of January 2024. Activision’s popular first-person shooter franchise is under the wing of Xbox following Microsoft’s purchase of the publisher for a sum record of 70 dollars. billion, officially closing last October. In January, Microsoft laid off 1,900 employees, including many from Activision and the Activision-owned studios responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of Call of Duty.
Xbox has also had a challenge adding Call of Duty titles to Xbox Game Pass, in part due to protracted legal challenges to the deal that limited collaboration between the companies involved in the merger until the deal was finalized.
