Star actor Dhanush and director Arun Matheswaran collaborated on Captain Miller, the first part of a three-part action-adventure film. Initially released in Tamil during Sankranthi, the film hit the big screens today in Telugu. Check out our review to find out what it’s like.

History:

Set in the pre-independence era, Agneeswara (Dhanush) belongs to a lower caste in a village. She joins the British army just to gain respect. However, she regrets having fought against her own people and leaves the army after killing the general. Later, she joins a revolutionary group and fights against the British army, which takes the precious 600-year-old idol from her village. Did Captain Miller recover it? What made Agneeswara kill the British general? Who is Bhanumathi (Priyanka Arul Mohan) and how does she relate to the story? What transformed Agneeswara into Captain Miller? The film will reveal the answers.

Plus Points:

National Award winner Dhanush once again immerses himself in his character, delivering a polished performance with effective emotional expressions, especially in action sequences.

Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar and Tollywood actor Sundeep Kishan shine in their respective roles, showing brilliance despite limited screen time.

The well-crafted action sequences, especially during the interval and climax, enthrall the audience and the music contributes significantly to the overall experience.

Bad points:

Director Arun Matheswaran is based on a non-linear screenplay and narrates the story in six chapters. While this narrative structure is not confusing, there is potential for a more engaging and dynamic first half.

Certain characters like Priyanka Arul Mohan and Jayaprakash add minimal value to the film. It is evidently a missed opportunity for Priyanka Mohan to showcase her acting in some scenes.

The film maintains a serious tone throughout, leaving out other thrills such as romance and comedy, which limits its appeal to a dedicated audience.

Tamil birth-related scenes may not resonate with Telugu audiences. Additionally, the Telugu subtitles contain numerous grammatical and translation errors, which is unexpected for a film of this scale.

Technical aspects:

Arun Matheswaran, in his roles as writer and director, leaves a good impression. A more engaging first half and gripping narrative could improve the film’s overall impact.

GV Prakash Kumar’s musical score stands out, complemented by Siddhartha Nuni’s decent cinematography. While the editing is generally satisfactory, trimming some unnecessary scenes could improve the viewing experience. The film maintains decent production values.

Verdict:

Overall, Captain Miller has his moments. Dhanush’s commendable performance, well-executed action sequences and GV Prakash Kumar’s musical prowess are notable positives. However, the film is hampered by a slow-paced first half, redundant scenes, a consistently serious tone, and a lack of emotional depth. If you appreciate serious action dramas, Captain Miller is worth considering; Otherwise, alternative entertainment options may be more suitable.
