Kristen Stewart has responded to criticism of her Recent Rolling Stone coverwhich generated controversy after its release.

As a guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Stewart was asked why she thinks the cover, which shows her with her hand inside her jockstrap, has received so much negative attention. Colbert started the conversation after revealing that CBS didn’t want him to show the cover of his show.

“Now, before I show this cover, I just want you and the public to know that I think it’s a perfectly lovely cover,” he said. “CBS asked us No to show it. They thought it wouldn’t be a good idea for us to show this and I don’t know why. Because there is the cover,” he said, turning it to face the audience.

“I mean you look better in a jockstrap than I do,” Colbert added, before asking the actor to comment on the criticism the image received.

Stewart pointed out a social double standard: “Well, it’s a little ironic because I feel like I’ve seen a lot of male pubic hair on the cover of some things. I’ve seen a lot of hands in pants and unbuttoned… I think there is a certain open recognition of a female sexuality that has its own will in a way that is annoying to sexist and homophobic people.

“I’ve certainly seen more revealing covers in Rolling Stone or Sports Illustrated,” Colbert said, to which Stewart responded, “It’s not even remotely explicit.”

Colbert added, “I think it also violates public expectations about female sexuality, unlike how you present it here.”

Stewart agreed: “Yes, because female sexuality is supposed to really want nothing more than to be possessed. And it feels like it sticks out in a way that could be annoying. But fuck you.”

Stewart’s hit Rolling Stone cover comes ahead of the release of her romantic thriller “Love Lies Bleeding,” which premiered March 8.
