Christie Brinkley is warning her followers to be “diligent with their sun protection” after she was diagnosed with skin cancer.

The model, 70 years old, announced his diagnosis on Instagram March 13, accompanied by graphic images of an open wound on his temple, which he also photographed stitched and bandaged.

“The good news for me is that we caught basal cell carcinoma early. And I had great doctors who removed the cancer and stitched me up perfectly like a couture Dior,” Brinkley wrote in her caption.

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic. It begins in the basal cells, a type of cell found in the skin. Basal cell carcinoma usually takes the form of a lump on the skin and is often caused by exposure to sunlight.

In her post, Brinkley said her type of cancer is “avoidable” and shared a message about the importance of sun protection, something she said she “took seriously” “a little late.”

“Now, for this old mermaid/gardener, I’ll put on my SPF 30, reapply as needed, wear long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat. And do regular full-body checkups…that’s a MUST!” ” Brinkley wrote.

Brinkley said she was “lucky” that a doctor found the basal cell carcinoma while accompanying one of her children to his appointment.

“At the end I asked him if he could look at a small spot that I could feel while I was applying my foundation. He took one look and knew right away that I needed a biopsy! He did it right then and there!” she said.

He concluded his post by thanking his doctors at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center in New York.

Brinkley has been open about hugging ages and responds quickly to negative comments about his appearance.

In June 2023, she took to Instagram to denounce the “Wrinkle Brigade.” She clarified that the term refers to “people who scan celebrities’ pages in the hopes of finding some cellulite, wrinkles, or anything they can point out to criticize.”

“It must be (some) form of compensation for something they are missing,” Brinkley said. “But when those people show up, there are others who show up with very kind and valuable messages. Those are the comments that restore my faith and make my heart sing!”
