MUNICH (AP) — He did it again.
Harry Kane scored a double as Bayern Munich reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League after beating Lazio 3-0 on Tuesday.
The English striker reached 33 goals in his 32nd game for Bayern, and the Bavarian giant turned around a round of 16 tie that began with a 1-0 defeat in Rome, winning 3-1 on aggregate.
“It was a perfect night for us,” said Kane, named player of the match.
Victory would reduce pressure on Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, whose premature exit at the end of the campaign was announced by the club after a run of three defeats in a row, including the defeat in Rome.
Before Tuesday’s game, new sporting director Max Eberl said Tuchel would remain in charge afterward even if Bayern went down. However, there was a feeling in the air that a defeat would precipitate the strategist’s departure.
Bayern, which is 10 points behind leader Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, faced the possibility of only its second elimination in 12 comparisons at this stage of the European tournament.
“If we were eliminated today, it would have been more than unfortunate,” acknowledged Bayern president Herbert Hainer.
Kane put victory on track by scoring in the 38th minute after Ciro Immobile had been close to putting Lazio ahead at the other end of the field.
Aleksandar Pavlovic put in a cross that Thomas Müller headed towards Raphaël Guerreiro, who hit the ball poorly. Kane dived to beat goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.
There was enough time left before the break for Müller to score the second in added time, combing the ball after Matthijs de Ligt’s shot from a corner kick.
Kane sold the result in the 66th by capitalizing on Provedel’s rebound from a shot by Leroy Sané. Kane reached six goals in the Champions League this season.
Bayern striker Serge Gnabry came on at the last minute to make his first appearance in December, on his return from a thigh injury.
The Bayern supporters group known as Club No. 12 organized an impressive choreography before the match. He showed the heraldic figure of the team on a blanket that said: “in the name of the city.”
An Italian fan among the centenary of Lazio fans who sang fascist songs at the beer hall where Adolf Hitler founded the Nazi Party has been arrested for giving Hitler’s salute the night before.
