Crystal Palace are set to sack manager Roy Hodgson, with former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner the leading candidate to replace him.

Hodgson, 76, will leave Palace in 15th place in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone after three wins in the last 19 games.

Glasner has been out of work since leaving Eintracht at the end of the 2022-23 season with one year remaining on his contract, having won the Europa League and reached a DFB-Pokal final.

Palace announced on Thursday afternoon that their pre-match press conference, which was due to take place at 1.30pm (GMT), had been canceled after Hodgson fell ill during morning training.

Palace picked up seven points from their first four games of the campaign but have only recorded three wins since September and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round by Everton.

The 3-1 home defeat to Chelsea on Monday night was their fourth in five matches, while during a humiliating 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium the previous weekend, A section of the away fans called for Hodgson and chairman Steve Parish to leave the club.

Hodgson is in his second spell at Palace, having been reappointed on a short-term contract in March 2023 following the sacking of Patrick Vieira. After leading the club away from the relegation zone, with five wins and three draws in 10 games to finish 11 points above the relegation zone, he signed a one-year deal last summer.

The former England manager spent four years in charge of Palace between 2017 and 2021. He signed a short-term deal with Watford in January 2022 but confirmed his departure after their relegation to the Championship was sealed and said he did not expect to take another managerial role in the Premier League, before returning to manage Palace 10 months later.

Hodgson’s coaching career spans more than 45 years with teams including Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and Palace, as well as the national teams of Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Finland.

Meanwhile, Glasner replaced Adi Hutter as Eintracht manager at the start of the 2021-22 season. They finished 11th in the Bundesliga after finishing fifth the previous season, but won the Europa League after defeating Rangers on penalties in the final.

Last season, the 49-year-old coach’s team finished seventh in the Bundesliga, qualifying for the Europa Conference League, while Napoli eliminated them from the Champions League in the round of 16.

Before taking the Eintracht job, Glasner was head coach of Wolfsburg, where he finished seventh and fourth in his two seasons, and then left at the end of the 2020-21 campaign to take charge of their Bundesliga rivals.

His other previous clubs include Austrian teams LASK and SV Reid, having spent his entire playing career with the latter.
