Sony’s “Madame Web” is one of the biggest flops in the history of comic book movies. The Dakota Johnson-directed film has only grossed $40 million so far at the domestic box office, and its worldwide gross remains below the $100 million mark after three opening weekends. Critics also trashed the film (it has a score of 12% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 225 reviews).
For its protagonist, the reception of “Madame Web” was not a surprise.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised this happened the way it did,” Johnson said. Bustle said in a new interview.
“Is there a reason for that?” the publication asked him.
“It is very difficult to make films, and in these big films that are made (and it is even starting to happen with the smaller ones, which is what really scares me) the decisions are made by committees and art does not do well. when a committee does it,” Johnson responded.
“Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around him,” he said. “You can’t make art based on numbers and algorithms. I have long had the feeling that the public is extremely intelligent and executives have begun to believe that they are not. The public will always be able to sniff the bulls—. Even if they start making movies with AI, humans aren’t going to want to watch them.
“But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie,” Johnson continued. “I had never done anything like this before. I’ll probably never do something like that again because I have no point in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign up for something, and it’s one thing, and then as you do it, it becomes something completely different, and you’re like: Hope for? But it was a real learning experience and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s in tatters, but I can’t say I don’t understand it.”
“Madame Web” is set in Sony’s Spider-Man universe and stars Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who gains the ability to see the future after a near-death experience. Her newfound power brings her into contact with three young women (Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor) who are being pursued by an evil explorer.
During her press tour for “Madame Web,” Johnson was often direct when speaking about the current state of Hollywood. She said The official that it is “very discouraging” to try to make movies nowadays.
“The people who run the streaming platforms don’t trust the creative people or the artists to know what’s going to work, and that’s just going to make us implode,” he said. “It’s really heartbreaking. It’s really fucking difficult. It is very difficult to do something. All the things I am interested in doing are really different, unique and very advanced in any subject.”
