After a couple of fake series finales and several multi-year hiatuses between seasons, including one that lasted six years, it’s no surprise that the most frequently asked question before Curb your enthusiasmThe twelfth and final season has been: Is this really the end?

“This time it really feels like that,” HBO comedy head Amy Gravitt told Deadline at the Curb Season 12 premiere party this week. “This is probably the most declarative thing I have ever experienced.”

Curb Creator, star and executive producer Larry David and fellow executive producer Jeff Schaffer told HBO from the beginning that season 12 would be the comedy’s final chapter.

“As has always been the case, the revelation of the story drove the decision,” Gravitt said. “So while they were writing, Larry and Jeff called to say that the best version is the final version. It’s hard to argue with that!

Having been at HBO for 20 years, Gravitt has worked in development on all of the network’s current comedy series except Curbwhich premiered back in 2000, two years after the end of Seinfeld, the hit NBC comedy that David co-created with Jerry Seinfeld.

HBO’s single-camera sequel made people cringe and laugh when Larry David, the character played by David on the show, “said the things we always wanted to say but never did,” Gravitt said on stage at the premiere.

While David lives up to his curmudgeonly alter ego in his public comments, he actually likes going to the premieres of his shows, Gravitt said.

“His favorite part is watching the show in the crowd,” she said. “He loves watching the episodes.”

looking back Curb’s legacy, “I think he’s always been a north star for us,” Gravitt said. “A lot of people have come in who have worked on the show, proven themselves on the show, or someone like Issa (Rae) shares as much DNA with Larry as other shows that people keep referencing. “Having a strong writer and performer at the center of the show, with those episodic stories tightly woven together, I think really set the standard for what comedies can be.”

As Curb is coming to an end, is David interested in possible spin-offs?

“I don’t think so, I think he’s serious this time,” Gravitt said of David’s departure from the Curb world behind.

The screenwriter-comedian has also not spoken to HBO about another series to follow Curb but the network would be a game.

“I would love to,” Gravitt said.

CurbThe final season premieres Sunday, February 4 on HBO and Max.
