“I was scared,” said Philip Schotte, who was aboard the infested flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Tuesday. he told Fox 2 Detroit. “She was just trying to fight off these worms.”

He said he looked across the aisle and saw at least a dozen maggots falling on the woman from the overhead compartment.

Another passenger had placed carry-on luggage, more like carrion, full of fish wrapped in newspapers in the stinking receptacle.

“I really don’t know what was going through my mind. I was trying to process it; Disgust is one thing, of course,” Schotte told the outlet.

“We had to wait there until help arrived,” he added.

“They discovered there was a rotten fish in there,” Schotte, a Holland native who lives in Iowa, told the outlet. “I saw everyone’s reaction when the bag was opened, which was just an immediate pinch in the nose.”

The man who apparently placed the stinky shellfish there stood up and claimed it, according to the report.

“The passenger explained that when he opened it there was fish there. That’s the only word I heard since he was sitting, just the word ‘fish,’” Schotte he told WXYZ.

“So I knew right then that there was rotten fish in there, and a bunch of worms were coming out of there.” He said.

The flight attendants carried the dirty cargo to the back of the plane and the pilot notified the passengers that they were returning to Amsterdam.

Schotte took another flight back to the United States a few hours later.

He told the outlet that “turning the plane around was the right decision because I was five rows back and when we got to the landing, one of the worms had made it to my row.

“I can only imagine what it would have been like if we had been on that plane for seven more hours,” he added.

Delta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.

In a statement to WXYZ, the airline said: “We apologize to customers of AMS-DTW Flight 133 because their trip was interrupted due to improperly packed carry-on luggage.

“The plane returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight. The aircraft was taken out of service for cleaning,” he added.

A passenger named Kelce tweeted about the unpleasant incident in a since-deleted post on X.

“It’s really wonderful to be 2 hours on an 8 hour @Delta to Amsterdam and discover that there are rotten fish and worms traveling with us,” wrote the user, who told the Daily Mail that the passenger responsible was later detained.

Kelce said the airline gave travelers 8,000 free miles, hotel room compensation and a $30 meal ticket in case they were delayed overnight.
