A Democratic lawmaker said artificial intelligence (AI) deepfakes are a bipartisan issue in the following reports of the recent spread of AI-generated graphic images of pop superstar Taylor Swift on social media.
“What happened to Taylor Swift is nothing new,” said Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) he said Thursday in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “For years, women have been targeted by deepfakes without their consent. And with advances in AI, creating deepfakes is easier and cheaper.”
“This is a problem that both sides of the aisle and even Swifties should be able to come together to solve,” Clarke continued.
Clarke’s colleague in New York, Rep. Joseph Morelle (D), introduced a bill last May. make share Deepfake porn is illegal. In a statement, his office said advances in technology have allowed deepfakes to grow rapidly.
“The spread of altered and AI-generated images can cause irrevocable emotional, financial and reputational damage, and unfortunately, women are disproportionately affected,” Morelle said. “As artificial intelligence continues to evolve and permeate our society, it is critical that we take proactive measures to combat the spread of misinformation and protect people from compromising situations online.”
Fran Drescher, president of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, praised the New York congressman in the statement and said the bill will help protect “personal privacy, security and autonomy.”
“Sexual abuse, whether it occurs physically or digitally, should never be excused or allowed as ‘personal expression,’ and should never be tolerated,” Drescher said. “Deepfakes are rape, objectification and exploitation, and must be illegal and punishable by law. “This bill is a powerful step toward ensuring this technology is not used to cause harm.”
