Kiran Rao says she started dating Aamir Khan in 2004, three years after Lagaan was released.
Before Aamir Khan started dating Kiran Rao, he was married to Reena Dutta. Aamir and Reena ended their marriage in 2002, a year after the release of Lagaan. Interestingly, Kiran worked as an assistant director on Lagaan, leaving many wondering if it was her romantic relationship with Aamir that resulted in his divorce from Reena. However, Kiran eventually revealed that that was not the case.
In a recent interview, Kiran revealed that she barely spoke to Aamir during the shooting of Lagaan. She clarified that they started dating in 2004, three years after the release of Ashutosh Gowariker’s directorial.
“A lot of people think that Aamir and I connected in Lagaan, but it wasn’t like that at all. Aamir and I met during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at that time. We had just shot a couple of commercials with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coca-Cola and that’s where Aamir and I reconnected. 3-4 years after Lagaan. I was not in contact with him. In fact, in Lagaan I barely spoke to him. In fact, he was dating someone else during Lagaan. When Aamir and I started dating in 2004, everyone thought that this started when we were filming Lagaan and this led to the divorce, which was not the fact,” Kiran told Zoom recently.
“When you marry someone who has had another relationship, you bring baggage that will affect your relationship. I highly recommend couples counseling. Aamir and I did couples therapy. It becomes a neutral ground where you talk about your needs, how you see the other person and that was very beneficial for me. It helped that Aamir and I agreed that we both have to be honest with each other, whatever the case may be,” she added.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao got married in 2005. However, they separated in 2001. However, they remain on cordial terms and recently co-produced Laapataa Ladies.
