Famed hip-hop artist and producer Dr. Dre said he suffered three strokes while hospitalized for a brain aneurysm three years ago.

In an interview on SiriusXM’s “This Life of Mine with James Corden,” Dre, 59, talked about how his condition worsened dramatically after being hospitalized for pain behind his right ear.

“Next thing you know, I pass out. I go in and I lose consciousness and I end up in the ICU. I was there for two weeks,” Dre said. “I hear the doctors come in and say, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are.'”

Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, was an original member of NWA and is a music producer and entrepreneur. He has produced some of the biggest names in hip hop, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, The Game and Kendrick Lamar.

Dre said he suffered three strokes during those two weeks. The artist was also told that he had high blood pressure, which he said was a surprise because he maintained a healthy lifestyle.

“I lift weights, I run, I do everything I can to stay healthy. I was like, ‘Would I have avoided that if I had exercised a little more or eaten differently or something?’ It’s like, no. That’s hereditary.” said.

The experience made Dre appreciate being alive, he said.

“When you go through that situation, it’s crazy, especially when I was on my way home from the hospital because that couldn’t possibly have happened,” the artist said. “I don’t know. It’s crazy, so now I know I had no control over it. It’s something that could happen out of nowhere.”

Dre was hospitalized for a brain aneurysm at a Los Angeles-area hospital in 2021, his attorney told NBC News at the time.

“Thank you to my family, friends and fans for your interest and well wishes,” Dre wrote in a mail on her Instagram on January 5, 2021. “I’m doing great and receiving excellent care from my medical team. I’ll be out of the hospital and back home soon. Shout out to all the great medical professionals at Cedars.”

the multiple Grammy Award-winning artist and producer is about to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Tuesday.
