Drake Bell spoke in his first interview since the premiere of the scandalous HBO series Silence on the set: the dark side of children’s television.
speaking in The Sarah Fraser Show On the podcast, Bell said she was not impressed with Nickelodeon’s response to the documentary, which details her sexual abuse as a teenager by Amanda Show Dialogue Coach Brian Peck.
“There’s a very well-tailored response that says, ‘Learn about your trauma,’ because they couldn’t say they didn’t know about this or what had happened or anything,” she said. “So I think it was a very well-tailored response from probably some big Hollywood lawyer.”
He added: “I find their answers quite empty, because, I mean, they still show our shows, they still show our shows,” he continued. “And I have to pay for my own therapy, I have to figure out what… I mean, if there was anything, if there was any truth behind them really caring, there would be more than just quotes on a page from obviously a legal representative. telling them exactly how to adapt a response.”
Bell said he participated in the documentary because of his comfort level with the producers. He added that he turned down a previous documentary project from a different group and was shocked when they lashed out at him.
“(Another documentary) requested my participation and when I refused, the response I got was incredible,” he said. “In the email, they said that people like me were the problem and that’s why things aren’t going to change in the industry because people like you don’t speak up and don’t show up. It was all this shame for not wanting to be part of his documentary. That is why I have always been cautious and nervous when I have been approached to talk about such a delicate topic.”
Bell went to rehab shortly after meeting with the Silence on set producers.
“I felt very comfortable in that interview, but I was going through a lot of things in my personal life and after that interview I ended up going into rehab,” he said. “We were going through a lot of trauma therapy, a lot of group therapy, a lot of individual therapy; The whole day he was busy working and processing this with a clear mind, and digging up all these things that I hadn’t faced it head on, or if I had tried, it was too painful. And so during that process, once I got out, I thought, ‘Maybe this would be a good time to reach out to them again and say, hey, I’m not 100% yet, let’s talk a little more, but I’m getting better. close to feeling comfortable finally sharing my story.’”
Bell also talked about involving his father in the documentary.
“My dad is a very emotional guy and has a big heart. And I was very cautious about involving him,” Bell said. He decided to include it, believing that “maybe it would be cathartic and beneficial for my dad to be able to do” the doctor as well. “I’m sure my dad blames himself a lot, you know? And I thought this might be an opportunity for him to realize that, you know, it’s one person’s fault.”
After the release of Silence on setNickelodeon issued the following statement: “Now that Drake Bell has revealed his identity as a plaintiff in the 2004 case, we are shocked and saddened to learn of the trauma he has endured, and we commend and support the strength needed to move forward. “
That statement follows a statement from Nickelodean that ended every episode of Silence on set: “In response to producers’ questions, Nickelodeon has stated that it ‘investigates all formal complaints as part of our commitment to fostering a safe and professional workplace… (W)e have adopted numerous safeguards over the years. years to help ensure we live up to our high standards and the expectations of our audience.”
