Drew McIntyre: It’s true that Punk and I had problems when I was younger

Drew McIntyre has been on fire lately with his truth-telling heel persona and his promo on CM Punk right after Punk confirmed he would have to miss out. WrestleMania 40 due to a torn triceps was the highlight of his current career. Telling Punk that she prayed for his injury created a viral moment and a version of a meme that has given WWE and McIntyre some top-selling merchandise.

In discussing his approach to promotions with The West Sport before Elimination chamberMcIntyre said a lot of what he said in that one was true, including the parts about knowing what it’s like to miss moments due to injury, having a loved one with cancer, and issues with Punk during their early WWE runs:

“To me, that’s the thing right now, there’s this freedom in WWE, especially for people that the company can trust to go out and be you and be what you feel is right, within reason. Some Of us can trust the microphone. There’s that feeling of ‘I’m going to try some things.’

“For me, a lot of it is, ‘I think this is hilarious. I think it works for the character. I think it’s going to be a great moment.’ I want to strengthen Punk and say that I can relate to him and say sincere things.

“For me, everything has to be based on truth, for me and for that character, because if it’s real for me, it’s real for everyone else, and you’ll feel it. Punk and I had problems when I was younger, everything that”. That’s true. I went in there and said, ‘I’ve been through injuries, moments have been taken away from me and I can understand that.’ He talked about one of his friends and him going through chemotherapy and how that’s a real hero. I identify with that. I didn’t know until I saw him backstage. My mother went through the same thing. Unfortunately, that’s how she passed. . I told her she could relate to all of this.”

Praying for Punk’s injury wasn’t legitimate, which could be based on things that were. McIntyre definitely subscribes to the theory that the best disputes are rooted in reality:

“You have to be professionals. I don’t want anyone to get hurt, no matter what the personal feelings are, no matter if they are rooted in reality, because they are. You just have to hope that everyone is professional and understands that we are trying to entertain the fans. For me what works is reality and what is real. You watch boxing or UFC; If you know, the two fighters absolutely despise each other, you are much more involved than just hugging and being friends. If they yell and get trashed at press conferences, trash talk and attack on social media, you are more invested if you feel like this is a legitimate issue here. If there is a legitimate problem, turn it up to ten.”

Drew doesn’t offer any details about what his and Punk’s issues were, but he’s probably saving them for when they resume their issues after Punk returns.
