‘Drishyam’, Indian thriller prepared for remake in English

“Drishyam,” a hit Indian thriller in which an ordinary man confuses the police to protect his family, will be remade in English. Production is carried out by India’s Panorama Studios with US companies Gulfstream Pictures and JOAT Films.

The film was first made in 2013 in Malayalam language, before being remade in Hindi with Ajay Devgn and Tabu in the lead roles in 2015. It got a Hindi sequel, “Drishyam 2,” in 2022, which grossed around $43 million. of dollars around the world.

Panorama, which produced the Hindi version for Viacom18 Motion Pictures, has acquired the international rights to the remake of “Drishyam 1 & 2” from the original producers, Aashirvad Cinemas, and is preparing multiple international versions. A Korean remake was announced in May last year with Anthology Studios, while Panorama says it is also close to finalizing a development deal for a Spanish-language retread. “Sheep Without a Shepherd,” a Chinese version, which did not involve Panorama, premiered in 2019 and was a $200 million box office success.

Gulfstream, co-founded by Mike Karz and Bill Bindley, previously produced the romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore “Blended” and the workplace comedy “Upgraded.”

JOAT was founded by former Warner Bros. Asia production executive Jack Nguyen. It now specializes in cross-territorial remakes in local languages. Nguyen said, “’Drishyam’ has a unique but enduring story. “It combines drama, emotional highs and lows into a fascinating cat and mouse story and our adaptation is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”
