After Elmo asked how everyone on X was doing, users responded with an outpouring of trauma.

How’s everybody? The answer, it seems, is not very good.

When Elmo the Muppet innocently asked people how they were doing on X (formerly Twitter), thousands of users responded, sharing their pain and despair.

The Sesame Street character has now responded, saying he’s “glad I asked” and posting the hashtag “#EmotionalWellBeing.”

It all started with a casual question, posed by the beloved children’s television character on Monday morning.

“Elmo just checked in! How’s everyone?” he asked in X.

Cue a collective meltdown by the Internet.

“Elmo, I’m suffering from existential dread here,” one user wrote.

“Every morning I can’t wait to go back to sleep. Every Monday I can’t wait for Friday. Every day and every week for life,” wrote another.

“The world is burning around us, Elmo,” said YouTuber Steven McInerney.

Celebrities like actress Rachel Zegler joined in, saying she was “resisting the urge to tell Elmo I’m a little sad.”

Perhaps the culprit was the timing of Elmo’s question.

It was never going to end well asking that question on a Monday morning in January, at the end of a month that many people feel has lasted forever.

But the red-haired, furry Muppet wasn’t intimidated by everyone dumping their problems on him.

Taking X on Tuesday night, he wrote: “Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it’s important to ask a friend how they’re doing. Elmo will be checking in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you. #EmotionalWellness.”

Other Sesame Street characters also spoke out to support their friend.

Ernie’s best friend. Bert added: “I’m here if you ever need a shoulder to lean on. I’ll make you both a hot cup of tea.”

And Elmo’s efforts to support people’s emotional well-being were praised by President Biden himself, who said he agreed with the puppet.

“We have to be there for each other, offer our help to the neighbor in need and, above all, ask for help when we need it.

“Even if it’s hard, you’re never alone.”
