Kumail Nanjiani remembers the launch of Marvel’s Eternals and revealed that he had to go to therapy after the negative reviews that Chloé Zhao’s film received.
“I had a great time making that movie and I realized that this is what work should feel like,” Nanjiani said during an appearance on the show. Inside You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “However, when that movie came out and the reviews weren’t good, it was very, very difficult for me and I realized that a lot of the way I evaluate what I want to do is based on the result of what other people do. Think about it.”
Eternals It was released in 2021 and starred Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, among others. The film currently has a score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“It was very, very difficult because Marvel thought the movie was going to get really good reviews, so they lifted the embargo very early and also put it in some fancy film festivals and sent us on a big world tour to promote the movie right when the embargo was lifted,” he added.
“So we had to travel the world while they thought we were going to participate in a wave of raves and it wasn’t true. The reviews were really bad,” Nanjiani said.
The actor said he read a lot of reviews and it ended up affecting his mental health, adding: “I think there was a strange soup in the atmosphere that explains why that movie was so criticized, and I don’t think it has much to do with it.” with the real quality of the movie. It was really difficult, and that’s when I thought it was unfair to me and (my wife) Emily, and I can’t approach my work this way anymore. Some things have to change, so I started getting therapy. “I still talk to my therapist about it.”
