Ewan McGregor opens up about why it was “necessary” to have an intimacy coordinator on set during sex scenes with wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The actor recently opened up to him radio times about what it was like to star with his wife in the television miniseries A gentleman in Moscowas well as why it can be “strange” to film intimate moments in front of an entire team.
“We had an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the team, and it’s strange to be naked in front of people, it’s strange to be intimate in front of the camera. If you were doing a dance scene, you would have a choreographer. “He’s an important part of the job now, because he’s someone the director and the actors meet in the middle.”

“My daughter is 22 years old. If a famous, older director walks up to a 22-year-old girl and says, ‘I want you to be naked in this scene,’ that actress might feel, ‘Oh my God, I have to do it.’ If you do, my career could depend on it. And then five years after that, she was able to look back and say, ‘I wish I hadn’t done it.’ Why am I naked in that scene? It’s unnecessary,’” McGregor said. “Now there’s someone you talk to whose career doesn’t depend on this person.”
McGregor isn’t the only actor to open up in recent years about the importance of intimacy coordinators on television and film sets.
Kate Winslet said The New York Times Magazine earlier this year that she “would have benefited from having an intimacy coordinator every time she had to do a love scene or be partially naked or even a kissing scene. “It would have been nice to have someone on my side, because I always had to defend myself.”
Emma Thompson also called the use of intimacy coordinators “fantastically important” in 2022, adding: “I don’t know (if) you were talking to someone who found it distracting, but another conversation you might find is people saying: ‘It made me feel comfortable. It made me feel safe. It made me feel like I could do this job.’”
