Thousands of Facebook users had trouble logging into their accounts on Tuesday morning as outages were reported around the world. Many reported being logged out and unable to log back in.
The outages were first reported on fall detector around 10:30 a.m. EST on Tuesday. At its peak, around 519,988 users nationwide reported experiencing problems with Facebook. instagram It was also hit by the apparent outages, with many Instagram users reporting issues with their feed not updating.
The problems appeared to be widespread, with countries including the United Kingdom, Japan and Brazil reporting problems.
Meta announced at 12:36 pm EST that they had recovered from the outage and services had been restored. The company also apologized for any inconvenience the outage may have caused.
The cause of the cuts is unknown at this time.
According to the associated press, the disruption comes days before the deadline for big tech companies to adhere to the European Union’s new Digital Markets Law. They reported that Meta would have to make changes to comply, but it’s unclear if the outage is related to any preparations the company may be making.
The Associated Press also reported that a senior official at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said they are not aware of any “specific election nexus or any specific nexus of malicious cyber activity” related to the outage.
