The 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards celebrated the best of, you guessed it, independent film (and television) on the Santa Monica Pier tonight, swapping Hasan Minhaj for Aidy Bryant as this year’s host. Gender-neutral acting categories were introduced last year, so competition was tough between the six acting categories (three for film and three for television).

The ceremony was broadcast live on Sunday, February 25 on Film Independent YouTube Channel and Feed X (formerly Twitter). Past Lives, The remainsand Beef were the big winners of the night, with The remains taking home 3 awards, while Past Lives and Beef took home 2 each.

While Oscar favorite Paul Giamatti was not nominated for his performance in The remnants, her Da’Vine co-stars Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Performance and Dominic Sessa won Best Breakthrough Performance. The film itself was also left out of the Best Picture race, which ultimately went to Past Lives, along with Best Director for Celine Song. Meanwhile BeefThe Netflix limited series won for Best New Scripted Series and star Ali Wong earned an award for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series.
