According to the medium One more game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi has stated that an update patch for the game is in the works, and that at least part of its intention is to fix the visual quality in performance mode. No precise date for arrival was given, except that Hamaguchi believes it would arrive soon. This update is made based on player feedback, particularly regarding some of the facial lighting being inappropriate.

We’ve received a lot of feedback on whether the graphics in performance mode will improve or not. We heard you and are currently working on an update patch to improve that aspect. I don’t think the release date is too far from now.

We’ve heard from players that in certain situations, facial lighting makes some characters’ shadows look very scary. That’s one part of the update we’re working on.
