A24 revealed its provocative action drama Civil war at the South by Southwest Film and Television Festival on Thursday night.
Screening before a packed audience at the Paramount Theater in Austin, Civil war It was revealed as a tribute to war journalism that distances itself from the politics that led to the central conflict. The film simply questions what the practicalities and horrors of a civil war would be like in the modern-day United States.
The film (trailer below) from acclaimed writer and director Alex Garland (ex machina) imagines a near-future dystopia in which the United States has been torn apart under the authoritarian rule of a three-term president (Nick Offerman). The story follows a journalist (Kirsten Dunst) as she makes her way through hostile and divided states of the United States.

Civil war has drawn attention for its timing, amid a contentious election year in which President Joe Biden has claimed “Democracy is at stake” given his opponent Donald Trump’s history of attempts to subvert election laws. While the idea of a modern civil war may seem far-fetched, a survey 2022 by YouGov and the Economist found that 40 percent of Americans believe a new civil war is “at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years.”
When asked when he wrote the film, Garland said, “It was four years ago. I wrote it back then and sent it to A24 and they just said, ‘Yeah, all good,’ which was surprising. “This is a brave film to finance, so it was highly appreciated.” Garland has been working with A24 for a long time, since his directorial debut, ex machina. The action film is said to be the independent studio’s biggest hit to date.
Civil war doesn’t offer much explanation for how the country gets to its dangerous state (the audience learns that the president disbanded the FBI), which the director says was intentional. Garland said: “The film is intended to be a conversation. It is not stating things. You want to leave space for people to participate in the conversation. It is important that it was a two-way street.”
Civil war It also stars Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Sonoya Mizuno, and much of the cast saw the film for the first time at the Austin premiere. “I need a second,” Dunst said to laughter from the audience. “I’ve never read a script like this and I’ve never seen a movie like this.”
Civil war will be released in theaters and IMAX on April 12.
