Nearly two years after she was kicked off the team, a former Nebraska basketball player has filed a lawsuit against her former assistant coach, head coach Amy Williams, NU athletic director Trev Alberts and the NU Board of Regents . In the lawsuit obtained by KETV NewsWatch 7, Ashley Scoggin claims that her assistant coach Chuck Love had groomed and pursued her into a sexual relationship. She said she feared further retaliation if she reported the sexual relationship between her and Love. Scoggin says she had worked in Love’s office during an internship while learning about a career in coaching. As suspicions grew, Scoggin says other members of the team planned a ruse to confirm and record video of her stay in Love’s hotel room during an away game. Once confronted in a team meeting before a game, Scoggin says she and Love denied allegations of a relationship. In the lawsuit, she blames Alberts for “failing to notify the staff that if the assistant coach had had a sexual relationship (with the plaintiff), then that was an abuse of power and ethics.” She also blames Alberts for not ordering an investigation into the sexual relationship. The lawsuit blames Williams for punishing Scoggin for Love’s “inappropriate behavior.” Scoggin is seeking punitive damages, as well as compensation for her physical and mental suffering, as well as the loss of her spot on the basketball team. “Colleges that employ professional coaches need to maintain firm boundaries between coaches and student-athletes for the protection of those student-athletes,” Maren Chaloupka, Scoggin’s attorney, told KETV NewsWatch 7. In a statement, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln told KETV NewsWatch 7 they do not comment on pending litigation. “The University became aware of the lawsuit this morning. “While the University does not comment on the details of the pending litigation, it disagrees with the allegations contained in the Complaint and intends to vigorously defend this matter,” the university said in a statement.
