The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent Matt Araiza on Thursday, the team announced.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported Friday that this is a minimal deal with an injury split, noting there is no financial risk for Kansas City.

Araiza was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but was released before the start of the ’22 regular season after being accused in a civil suit of participating in the gang rape of a minor during an off-campus party at San Diego State University in 2021.

Prosecutors announced in December 2022 that neither Araiza nor any of his former Aztec teammates who were also charged in the reported assault would be charged. Last year, Araiza was withdrawn from a lawsuit presented by the alleged victim. Araiza also agreed to dismiss his defamation countersuit against him.

“I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the Chiefs,” Araiza said in a statement Thursday. “I am excited to continue my career in the NFL. I want to thank my family, who has been my support, and my many friends who have been unwavering in their support.”

The Chiefs, who won their second straight Super Bowl earlier this month, could use a new veteran starting punter. Thomas Townsend He is scheduled to hit free agency next month.
