French Open 2024 Semifinal Highlights: Badminton’s world number one doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated South Korea’s Seo Seung Jae and Kang Min Hyuk in the men’s doubles semi-finals of the French Open Super 750 tournament in Paris.

Earlier, Lakshya Sen was defeated after being pushed into a decider in his men’s singles semi-final against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The Indian had gone ahead just in time to win the first game 22-20, but was outplayed by his Thai opponent in the second game. After taking an 11-2 lead in the second game, Vitidsarn won the second game 21-13 to force a decider. In the third game, he was outplayed by the world champion and lost the match 22-20, 13-21, 11-21.

In a battle between the world’s two pairs, the Indians dominated most of the match against the world champions to pull one back, after losing to the same pair in the Indian Open final earlier this year. Satwik-Chirag won 21-13, 21-16.

This will be Satwik-Chirag’s third French Open final and a third consecutive final starting in 2024. The Satwik-Chirag duo defeated the Thai pair of Jomkoh Supak and Kittinupong Kedren with a dominant performance in the quarterfinals. Sen, on the other hand, recovered from a game down once again to defeat Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in a three-game thriller on Friday.

Sindhu overthrown

On Friday, PV Sindhu was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the French Open after an epic battle against Olympic champion Chen Yufei in the Super 750 badminton tournament. Sindhu fell 24-22 17-21 18-21 in a clash of 92 minutes where Chen was pushed to the limit. Playing her first BWF Badminton World Tour event since returning from a knee injury, Sindhu went toe-to-toe with second seed Chen Yu Fei of China in the women’s quarter-finals, which were played at the badminton venue for Paris 2024. Despite her defeat, there will be many positives to take away from Sindhu. As Shivani Naik writes, PV Sindhu can leave Paris with many positives with All England on the horizon.

It was Lakshya Sen’s third consecutive victory at the French Open. It bodes well for him as he intends to be late to return to this place in a few months. Read more here in Shivani Naik’s summary.
